Snapshot in Time

Indiana’s 2016 Bicentennial and its Jewish
Communities Celebrate a Legacy of Tradition, Faith, and Community Through the Hoosier Jewish Community Snapshot in Time

Indiana’s 2016 Bicentennial Celebration aims to honor the state’s 200 years of history. Since the creation of the Indiana Territory in 1800 and statehood in 1816, the Jewish community has been an integral part of its history. The Indiana Jewish Historical Society and Jewish communities throughout Indiana will join other Hoosiers in honoring and celebrating a lasting legacy for future generations.

The Hoosier Jewish Community Snapshot in Time project is targeted to all Jewish people in Indiana. The project is an opportunity for Jewish people throughout the State to collect pictures, documents, video clips, and other digital and/or hands-on materials that tell their story, their family story, and their Jewish community story for future generations. Submissions will be accepted through December 31, 2016. Submission ideas include:

• Family pictures from life cycle events taking place during 2016 (i.e. brit, bar/bar mitzvah, wedding).
• Interviews with your parents, grandparents, or someone of accomplishment.
• Invitations from Jewish lifecycle events in 2016.
• Report card, consecration certificates and confirmation announcements.
• Ner Tamid awards from Scouting.

A complete inventory will be made of the submissions and items from the Snapshot in Time will be achieved at the Indiana Historical Society. All members of the Indiana Jewish Community are encouraged to participate. All submissions must include name, date, age, and local community. All submittals should be mailed to IJHS Snapshot in Time, c/o Lori Moss, 6905 Hoover Road, Indianapolis, IN, 46260 no later than December 31, 2016.

The Indiana Jewish Historical Society serves as a coordinating body for Bicentennial events within the Jewish community. Founded in 1972, the mission of the Indiana Jewish Historical Society is to collect, preserves, publish and share the history of the Jewish experience in Indiana.
